Narmad remembered on birth anniversary

The city remembered scholar-poet and social activist Narmad on his 179th birth anniversary on Friday. The occasion was marked with multiple events.

Noted poet Chinu Modi ‘Irshad’ delivered a speech at computer science hall of the Veer Narmad University, while a ‘Kavi Sammelan’ (recital of poetry) was held at Mahavir M.Ed. College.

Also, a play was staged at the auditorium of Gujarati Department at P.T. Women’s College. The play depicted Narmad’s struggle against social evils prevalent in 19th century.

Narmadashankar Lalshankar Dave, known as ‘Narmad’, was born on 24th August 1833 in Surat.  An outspoken writer and activist, he fought orthodoxy and supported empowerment of women. By the time he died in 1886, the scholarly rebel had acquired the reputation of a man much ahead of his times.
