Patil was at the function to address a gathering of workers, held in the Koli Patels’ community hall in Motiwada. He rose to speak and was immediately interrupted by Ajay Patel, chairman of Pardi sub-district Sarpanch Association, a body of village panchayat chiefs. Patel and his deputy Kishor Tandel asked Patil to listen to their complaints. Their request was turned down by the MP, who assured to give them a hearing after the function got over.
Not content with the reply, village chiefs and their supporters left the venue but only after lodging protest. Attempts by the local party office-bearers to stop them also led to chaotic scenes.
Party’s central leader Smriti Irani held a closed-door meeting with five office-bearers of Sarpanch Sangh later and assured them of solution to their grievances. On the other hand, Patil too reportedly pulled up a prominent local leader before leaving the venue.
Ajay Patel, the man who led the protestors, was said to be unhappy over the role played by BJP leaders in Rentlav episode, wherein clashed had taken place between BJP and NCP workers.
Another speculation has linked Sanjay Joshi’s Silvassa visit to the Maliwada fiasco. Joshi, a known detractor of Modi, had addressed an RSS gathering in Silvassa a day earlier (July 29) and had left for Delhi from Valsad. It is believed that protests against Patil might be a part of dissident group’s strategy.
