Senior BJP rebel leader Keshubhai Patel shall contest the poll from Visavadar. The decision follows resolution of the disagreement that the veteran reportedly developed with Gordhan Zadaphia, leader of Mahagujarat Janta Party (MJP) over founding his own party.
Sources close to Keshubhai claimed on Thursday that Zadaphia has agreed to Keshubhai forming his own party. It may be recalled that earlier, he had insisted upon Keshubhai contesting the poll under MJP’s banner. Not only that, MJP is also likely to merge with Keshubhai’s new party, which shall have a word like ‘Bharatiya’, ‘Rashtriya’ or ‘Janta’ as part of its name.
A senior leader said on condition of anonymity that an important reason for choosing Visavadar was the view that Keshubhai will need to visit the constituency only twice or thrice. The obvious stronghold was chosen as the senior leader will be required to tour entire state during campaign.
Sources claimed that Rajkot-2 seat also received serious consideration from Keshubhai camp. Narendra Modi had won this seat, after Vajubhai Vala vacated it for him.
As for Keshubhai’s new outfit, former chief minister Suresh Mehta has been entrusted with the responsibility to oversee the process of founding the party as well as seek recognition for it from the Election Commission. He will also assist Keshubhai and Zadaphia in deciding the party symbol.
Once the necessary procedures are over, the new party shall be announced in a ‘Maha Sammelan’ (mega rally) in Ahmedabad.
It may be recalled that long back in 1998 Keshubhai contested his last assembly election and became Chief Minister for the second time.
