govt says 152 talukas in state scarcity hit

Gandhinagar : Gujarat government has declared 152 talukas (sub-districts or tehsils) in 22 districts as scarcity-hit. The decision that followed a meeting of high-powered Ministerial Committee meeting on Tuesday now necessitates immediate measures in the affected areas. As per government claim, the decision has been taken in wake of shortage of water caused by further delay in rains.

The meeting was chaired by Finance Minister Vajubhai Vala. Secretaries of related departments also took part in the meeting, apart from ministers.

Among 22 affected districts, 14 have been declared to be completely scarcity-hit, implying all talukas in these districts would be considered affected. The districts declared completely affected include Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Banaskantha, Bharuch, Bhavnagar, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Porbandar, Junagadh, Amreli, Surendranagar, Patan, Mehsana and Kutch.

Government also declared its intention to complete the work on Narmada canal network to facilitate supply of drinking water, especially in Kutch and Saurashtra regions. New tenders would be floated for construction work.

It has to be noted that a central team, headed by Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, had announced allocation of Rs. 425 crores to ensure drinking water supply in rural areas of the state during its recent visit to the state capital.
