Ahmedabad : The Gujarat High Court has upheld a Gujarat government notification on land acquisition for the people of Maharashtra who were displaced due to Sardar Sarovar Narmada (SSN) Project.

Under the notification, the state government had acquired 309 acres of land from Gujarat farmers to rehabilitate the displaced people of Maharashtra.

A division bench of Justice DH Vaghela and Justice GB Shah rejected the petition filed by  Chandulal Mepabhai Jasani and 30 others,  in which they had urged the court to dismiss the government’s notifications of  28 February and  2 March issued under  Gujarat Land Acquisition Act 1984.

The petitioners, all farmers of Sadgavan Nimbhora and Ubhad villages of Nijar Tehsil of Tapi district, argued that they have invested huge money to make the land fertile. They are are critical of the government move to acquire and distribute their fertile land to the farmers of Maharashtra.

Taking into account the facts and circumstances, the division bench observed that the State government has no other option but to distribute the land to project-affected people of Maharashtra.
