Ahmedabad :

A new AC double-decker train on the Ahmedabad-Mumbai route, announced in the Railway Budget earlier this year, is expected to begin its run from the 15 August. The authorities are working hard to start the new train earlier than its proposed date, hopefully by July end, railway sources said.

The rakes of the new 14 coach-train have already been through the trial runs. Each rake of this new train has stainless steel body, control-discharge toilet system and high-speed design bogies with air springs for superior ride quality.

This new train’s passenger-carrying capacity is 70% more than that of its closest rival, the Shatabdi which has a total passenger-carrying capacity of 900. Each AC double-decker coach will have  a total of 120 seats--70 seats in the lower section and 50 in the upper section. In comparison, a Shatabdi coach carries only 78 passengers.

The AC double-decker train, running at a maximum speed of 120 km per hour, will complete its journey in seven hours between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, and will halt at Borivli, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara and Anand. It will run on all the days of the week, except Sunday. It will leave Mumbai at 6 am and reach Ahmedabad at 1 noon. On its return journey, the train will leave Ahmedabad at  02.20 p.m. and reach Mumbai at 9.40 p.m.

The only odd factor about the new development is that there is only a 10-minue gap between the departure and arrival timings of the AC double-decker and Shatabdi trains at both the Mumbai and Ahmedabad ends. This may result in the new train carrying less than its expected rush of passengers, and thereby go against the very objective of reducing the pressure on growing passenger traffic between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, the sources said.
